The Raw Materials That we Use for our Compost  Comes from Healthy Happy Holstein Dairy Cows!

Our composting process starts when our dairy cows take a bite of a custom blend of good tasting high energy food.  The food travels to the cows rumen (stomachs) where microbes (bacteria) begin to digest the raw ingredients (alfalfa, grass, corn, etc.) to provide energy to the cow.  The cow uses this food for her growth and daily milk production.  What she doesn’t use in her body she excretes in the form of urine and nutrient-rich manure.

We capture this manure in the spacious pens where she lives and from the bedding of straw that she rests on.  Her bedding is changed most times on a daily basis.

MVC brings this ideal mixture of straw and manure (carbon & nitrogen sources) from the dairy out to our composting site 5 to 6 times per year.  This helps keep the pens clean and gives us fresh raw material in which to begin another composting cycle.

There are many issues that face the modern dairy business in Southern Idaho.  Perhaps the issue that remains the most sensitive to people’s hearts (and noses) is the smell of the manure created by  dairy cows.

MVC HAS A SOLUTION!

Instead of allowing the raw manure to pile up in corrals, then apply it to row crop fields in the Spring or Fall, we turn it into nutrient-rich, earth-like compost.   One to two weeks after we have begun composting the raw materials, the aerobic microorganisms in the outer layers of the compost piles consume any odors that are created from the materials.  We currently provide our Custom Composting Service to 25 of Magic Valley’s environmentally-friendly and neighbor-friendly dairies.  Call today, if you would like more information.
